Tips To Speed Up Your Tattoo Removal

Boosting Your Immune System

Your immune system is the key component to removing ink from your body during the tattoo removal process. Specialized cells in your immune system called Macrophages engulf the broken ink particles and bring them to your lymphatic system, eventually the ink particles are cleared through your liver and kidneys. The key to boosting your immune system is living a healthy lifestyle and preventing possible infections.

Increase Your Water Intake

Drinking approximately 3 liters of water a day has been shown to increase the rate at which the ink clears your body. A well hydrated immune system is able to carry away ink particles at a faster rate than a dehydrated system. It is well documented how water is a natural detoxifier…….So drink up !!!!

Eat a Well-Balanced and Nutritious Diet

Eating a healthy diet with adequate protein, vitamins and minerals which are key for a healthy immune system. The intake of fruits, vegetables and omega 3’s is highly recommended.

Quit Smoking

Smoking has serious consequences on your overall health and tends to decrease the efficiency of your immune system, therefore slowing your tattoo removal process significantly. Smoking also has negative effects on your circulatory system which also slows the tattoo removal process.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise has scientifically been proven to be an overall health benefit to the entire body. Daily exercise increases the strength and performance of the immune system, increases the rate of blood circulation and increases the efficiency of all of the organs involved in the tattoo removal process. People who exercise regularly have been shown to remove the broken ink particles faster, therefore requiring less sessions.

Get More Sleep !!!

Make sure to get adequate amounts of sleep on a nightly basis. Your body recovers and heals better when you get the recommended 8 hours of sleep. Sleep is so important in maintaining the health of the immune and circulatory system.

Reduce Stress

Try to reduce as much stress in your life as possible. Daily stress of working, family and finances can raise your cortisol levels which in fact has a negative impact on your immune system health, again slowing the tattoo removal process. Try to use exercise, yoga or meditation to accomplish this.

Avoid Getting New Tattoos During the Removal Process

Your immune system is already in overdrive during the removal process. Getting new ink stimulates the immune system attack it, since the body considers it a foreign body. You want your body’s immune system to focus solely on the broken ink particles, not the new larger ink particles.

Avoid Large Amounts of Alcohol Consumption

Large quantities of alcohol has an overall negative effect on the immune system and organs, such as your liver, which are required to remove the broken ink particles. Alcohol consumption also causes dehydration, which will slow your circulatory system. Remember the macrophages we spoke off originally, well the circulatory system is their highway, so you want to keep it moving quickly. With dehydration, that highway system slows dramatically.

Avoid Sun Exposure Over Treatment Area

During the removal process, it is recommended to avoid sun exposure the best you can. You have cells in your skin called melanocytes that produce color, a tan, when exposed to the UV rays of the sun. The laser also activates these cells but does not produce a tan. The combination of the laser and the sun can cause a condition called hyperpigmentation, darkening of your skin. Cover the tattoo or use a high SPF when exposed to sun. The best thing is to avoid the sun.

Follow your Aftercare Instructions

Follow up care is just as important as all of the other things mentioned above. Apply Aquaphor, Neosporin or Bacitracin to the area twice a day for two days. Also keep the treatment area out of the sun and do not pop blisters if they form. Itchiness is normal, try not to scratch it to much as this can lead to a higher chance of scarring.

Keep your Follow Up Appointments

It is okay to miss some appointments since more ink will clear with more time between sessions but it is a process that takes multiple sessions to continue clearing. Keeping your appointments also allows us to evaluate the process by physically seeing the change and the decrease in ink.

Rest for Two Days after the Removal Session

As mentioned previously, your immune system goes into overdrive after the procedure, so give yourself some time to rest and relax for a couple of days after the session.

Increase Circulation with Massage

Massaging the area where the tattoo is located can increase circulation, therefore speeding up the removal process. Due to gravity and distance from the heart, hands and feet tend to clear ink slower, so massaging these areas will help stimulate circulation and clearance.
